Cause: Executed (Hanged) for comitting murder
    • Ely was indicted at the assizes held in Gloucester 19th August 1732 for 'Wilfull murder' of Thomas Turberville, a carpenter, on 28th April. Thomas was found in his workshop with his brains dashed out and his skull chopped in pieces with a broad axe. Ely made no attempt to escape when apprehended he wore a shirt and a pair of stockings the property of Thomas the coat was stained with blood. Ely had been in the company of Thomas the preceeding evening to view some deer. He called one witness on his behalf who only served to to tend to his conviction as this witness declared he verily believed him guilty. Ely first said the shirt belonged to his brother and then later changed to say it was his father's.

On September 4th at 7am Ely was carried to Mitcheldean in order to be executed near that place. After he was executed he was hung in chains on Meane Hill nr Mitcheldean. He had declared his innocence right to the last when the ladder was removed from the tree. He admitted to being a 'Sabbath breaker' saying '... twas usual for young people to work all week and on the Sabbath go and steal deer', also he was very much addicted to whoring which he said gave him the greatest uneasiness. There were 10,000 people present at the hanging. Apparently, before he was hanged he cursed the place and said there would forever be a plague of flies.

On November 4th the gibbet from which he was hanged was cut down and his body left on the ground.
